Nyack in Black & White - Race Relations over Three Centuries
Recipient of the David Cohen/EMiERT Multicultural Award presented by the American Library Association and an Award Towards Excellence presented by the Lower Hudson Conference of Historical Agencies and Museums

by Carl Nordstrom
360 pages
Published in December, 2005 by the Historical Society of the Nyacks
Carl Nordstrom's story is a suspenseful one, full of surprises, and extraordinarily well written. His research belies the local myth that slaveholders in Rockland County were benign and welcomed emancipation. Going forward through the 19th and 20th centuries, he shows that attitudes of both black and white people persisted on the slave/master model. The explosive center of the book is about the 1967-68 "race riots" in Nyack, which were observed by South Nyack resident Professor Nordstrom firsthand.
