FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE JOHN SCOTT ARMCHAIR WALKING TOURS – FALL, 2011 The opening program in September, "NYACK'S GREAT PARADES," will be presented by BRIAN JENNINGS, Local History Librarian at the Nyack Library. At the turn of the last century when Nyack was the capital of Rockland County and the surrounding areas, parades were major events in the social life of the County. Drawing from the Nyack Library's vast collection of historical photographs, Brian Jennings will take us back in time to when Nyack was host to many great events which were celebrated with grand parades along Main Street and Broadway. These parades marked events like the end of World War I, political campaigns, Fire Company marches, community organizations and the 1909 Hudson- Fulton celebration. The program will be presented first at the Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway, at 7:00 PM Wednesday evening, September 21, 2011 and will be repeated the following afternoon, Thursday, September 22 at 2:00 PM at the Congers Lake Community Center in Congers Lake Park, off Gilcrest Road in Congers. (Seating is limited at the Nyack Library and attendees must call the library in advance to register.(358-3370 Ext 214). The October or second program in the series, "WEST NYACK, FACT OR FICTION?" will be presented by BERT DAHM, native and life long resident of West Nyack. He will present the history, mystery and lore of this Clarkstown hamlet, including glimpses into NY's last witch trial, the sunken railroad engine that lost its way, the origins of the Nyack Turnpike and the grand old hotel and restaurant that still stands at Clarksville corners. Many old photographs will enhance this story of "the other Nyack". The program will be presented first at the Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway, at 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening, October 12, 2011 and will be repeated the following afternoon, Thursday, October 13 at 2:00 PM at the Congers Lake Community Center in Congers Lake Park, off Gilcrest Road in Congers. (Seating is limited at the Nyack Library and attendees must call the library in advance to register.(358-3370 Ext 214). The November program, "THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN ROCKLAND AND THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY, A LOOK AT AMERICA'S FIRST CIVIL WAR", will be presented by BOB GOLDBERG, the producer of the ArmChair Walking Tours. The program will be presented first at the Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway, at 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening, November 9, 2011 and will be repeated the following afternoon, Thursday, November 10 at 2:00 PM at the Congers Lake Community Center in Congers Lake Park, off Gilcrest Road in Congers.
